Tribal Orissa

Duration: 10 Days / 9 Nights
Destinations: Kolkata - Bagdogra – Kalimpong - Gangtok – Pelling - Darjeeling – New Jalpaiguri – Kolkata

Day 01 Arrive Kolkata
Fly from London Heathrow to Kolkata. Arrive Kolkata and transfer to your hotel for one night

Day 02 Kolkata – Bhubaneshwar
Enjoy a half day sightseeing tour of Kolkata including Visit the flower market. Victoria Memorial, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Museum...
Kolkata is a city of glaring contrasts: a curious blend of the old and the new, partly feudal, partly born out of growing urbanization, partly un-definable. It is a medley of the east and the west, a graft of a European city imposed on the Asian landscape that gives Kolkata its bewildering charm, confusion and excitement. Being just about 300 years old, Kolkata hardly has many great historical monuments. Perhaps, the oldest remembered is the site where the Alight Temple now stands. Today Kolkata is the largest city in India with a population over 10 million and boasts of India's first ever Metro rail system. It is a city that shocks on first impression but eventually the visitor falls in love with it. The sightseeing of the city includes a visit to the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata's most imposing and monumental dream in marble opened by the Prince of Wales in 1921 and often called the "Taj" of the British Raj, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Indian Museum, the largest in India, with one of the best collections of Indian art.

Day 03 Bhubaneshwar
Enjoy a full day excursion to Konark, Puri, Jagannath Temple and Pipli.
The great 13th-century Sun temple of Konark is 33km north-east of Puri. The temple was conceived as a chariot for the sun god, Surya, and includes 24 gigantic carved-stone wheels, seven mighty horses and elaborate erotic carvings.

One of the four 'Dhams' -Puri- is situated on the shoreline of the Bay of Bengal and is just 60 kms from Bhubaneshwar. Puri is blessed with Golden sand beaches for which it has been famous all over the world. Though life here revolves around the Jagannatha Temple, the place has been attracting tourists who love to swim in the sea and laze around on its golden sands. The beaches of Puri show divergent colours- calmness gives peace to mind while the crashing breakers remind of the turbulent life within the calmness. The sunrays falling on seawater gives the illusion of a rainbow on water surface.

By the time, the Lingaraja temple was built; the Jagannath cult had become widespread, throughout Orissa. This is exemplified by the fact, that the presiding deity, here, is the Svayambhu Linga - half Shiva, half Vishnu, a unique feature of the temple. Almost all the Hindu gods and goddesses are represented in this temple, mirroring the inherent element of harmony within the religion. One of the noticeable features of the Lingaraja temple is its degrading architectural beauty, as one retreat from the deul (the Sanctum Sanctorum), away towards the bhogamandir (the hall of offerings). This is so, because the rulers of three dynasties built the Lingaraja temple, over a huge span of time. The deul was built by the prosperous Kesari dynasty. The Muslim invasion, after that, left the Ganga dynasty in a position, that they built the bhogamandir at the cost of its architectural beauty.

Day 04 Bhubaneshwar – Taptapani. (280 kilometres; 6 hours)
Drive from Bhubaneswar to Taptapani
Arrive Tapta Pani and transfer to your Hotel for one night.
Taptapani, literally meaning hot water, is a beautiful village in Berhamput located in the outskirts of Gopalpur town which is about 67 km away rom the heart of the city. A hot water spring bubbling with sulphur content is the prime attraction here. This small village is located in the scenic backdrop of hilly regions inhabited by aborigines of Orissa.

It is believed that the bath in this hot water spring alleviate the skin ailments, mainly due to the sulphur content of the water. The water is about 1000°F at its origin and is canalized to a pond in the village for the people to take bath. Many tourists visit this place to experience the natural beauty of the village and also to experience the bath in Taptapani.

Day 05 Taptapani – Rayagada - (135 kilometres; 4 hours)

Arrive Rayagada and transfer to your hotel for one night

Day 06 Rayagada – Gopalpur On Sea (230 kilometres; 5 hours)

Gopalpur enamors the visitor with its pristine beauty and solitude. This picturesque place offers a relaxed vacation amidst casuarina groves on the Bay of Bengal. Desolate beaches, vacant resorts are what the place sees during most seasons. Gopalpur falls within the Berhampur district, famous for its trade in silk fabric. Silk-weavers line the street beside the Jagannath and Nilkantheswar temple at Berhampur, 17 kms from here. This otherwise non-descript town was once a part of the ancient and wealthy kingdom of Kalinga. It was called Paloura then. During its prosperous days, the city traded with Sumatra, Java and Bali in silk and pearls. The East India Company would transport cheap labor from here to the Company-owned tea estates in Assam.
